A semi-autonomous truck operated by Otto has completed the first of multiple test runs planned in Ohio this week as the state announced a $15 million investment in highway sensors and cable to support testing of advanced transportation technologies.

Otto announced Oct. 25 that one of its heavy-duty, self-driving trucks completed a 120-mile delivery for Anheuser-Busch InBev the week of Oct. 17 in what it called the world’s first shipment by a self-driving truck.

SAN FRANCISCO — With its recent acquisition of self-driving truck startup Otto, Uber Technologies Inc. is plotting its entry into the longhaul trucking business, aiming to establish itself as a freight hauler and a technology partner for the industry.

For now, Otto is focused on logging as many test miles as possible with its five (soon to be six) retrofitted Volvo cabs that it runs almost 24/7 on highways in the Bay Area and elsewhere.
