Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on June 18 said he thought it would be difficult for Congress to pass an increase to fuel taxes to pay for new infrastructure projects, but he pledged to fix the funding woes affecting the country’s transportation network.

Bill Graves, president of American Trucking Associations, is testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee for a hearing on the Highway Trust Fund.

The House on June 9 approved spending legislation with key trucking provisions, including one that would permit twin 33-foot trailers on U.S. highways. The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill now goes to the Senate.

Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) introduced legislation this month that he said would add up to $15 billion a year to the Highway Trust Fund over the next decade through changes to the Medicaid expansion match rates established under President Obama’s signature health-care law.
