U.S. employers added 171,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 7.9% as more people entered the labor force, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.8% in September, the lowest since January 2009, from 8.1% in August as employers added 114,000 people to payrolls including 700 in the trucking industry, the Labor Department reported Friday.

U.S. employers added 96,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.1%, from 8.3% a month earlier, the Labor Department said Friday.
