Cellular service providers are shutting down their 3G networks this year, a shift that could impact legacy wireless systems that some fleets are still using, experts said.

Federal trucking regulators are warning truckers that mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks as early as next year to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G.

Strong freight demand helped less-than-truckload carrier Saia Inc. report record third-quarter revenue, profits and operating ratio.

While the timing is expected to vary, many wireless cellular providers plan to phase out or “sunset” their remaining 2G and existing 3G networks early next year, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Although no devices have been approved for drivers, Canada’s electronic logging device mandate is less than a month away and fleets should prepare accordingly.
