The number of Americans traveling by car for the Memorial Day holiday will hit a 12-year high this year, fueled by a growing economy and relatively low gasoline prices, the nation's largest motorists' advocacy group said May 17.

U.S. motorists logged 2.9% more miles in September versus last year, new federal data showed, continuing a record-setting pace amid low gasoline prices and lower unemployment.

U.S. road travel rose by 2.6% in April compared to a year ago, according to data released June 23 by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
