Toyota Class 8 Hydrogen Powertrain Approved in California

is to begin offering Class 8 commercial truck manufacturers and operators a hydrogen-fueled powertrain in California later this year after winning zero-emission certification for the product from the state , the Japanese automotive giant said April 24.
Commercial production of the powertrain for customers will start at the company’s Georgetown, Ky., facility, the largest manufacturing site in Toyota’s global portfolio. includes hydrogen fuel storage tanks, fuel cell stacks, batteries, electric motors and transmission.
“We believe hydrogen will play a significant role in the emissions reduction of heavy-duty transport while not sacrificing the distance, power or fueling times needed to keep these fleet and individual operators running,” said .
“Fuel cell technology is scalable, and we believe it will take an increasingly visible and important role in our collective fight to reduce and eliminate carbon as we move towards a hydrogen society,” he added.
Toyota began work on hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck powertrains in 2017.
Toyota said it worked with Paccar Inc. unit to develop its latest hydrogen powertrain iteration, deploying 10 Kenworth T680 Class 8 trucks for testing.
