UPS Inc. announced it will deploy 50 newly designed plug-in electric delivery trucks by the end of the year. The vehicles are comparable in acquisition cost to its conventional-fueled package delivery trucks without the use of subsidies — a development it calls an industry first and one that breaks a key barrier to large-scale fleet adoption.

Amazon’s ambition has been in plain sight for years. The company has built its own network of merchandise warehouses and package sorting centers. It enlisted its own airplanes and truck trailers to transport cargo. It registered to move freight across oceans, and in dozens of cities it tapped couriers to deliver packages directly to shoppers’ doors.

UPS Inc. wants to build a $41 million expansion to its El Paso, Texas, facility, and it plans to do so with more than $2 million in incentives from the city and the county.
