WASHINGTON — An Oregon congressman has introduced legislation that would boost federal taxes on diesel and gasoline to fill a widening shortfall in the federal government’s main source of transportation funding.

A bill has been introduced in the House and Senate that would dramatically reduce federal diesel and gasoline taxes and let the states keep most revenue from the two levies rather than sending the revenue to the Highway Trust Fund.

Washington state Senate leaders have proposed boosting the state’s taxes on diesel and gasoline by 11.5 cents to pay for $12.3 billion in transportation projects, The Associated Press reported.
