Volkswagen’s truck manufacturing brand Scania plans to equip all its future electric trucks with Northvolt batteries, in a vote of confidence for the cash-strapped Swedish battery maker.

Swedish truck maker Scania is ramping up production of electric rigs now that previously delayed batteries from Northvolt AB have begun arriving in greater numbers at its factory in Sodertalje.

Scania is combining with logistics firm sennder Technologies to deploy 100 e-trucks to carriers in Germany.

Traton SE is banking on its Swedish Scania brand, one of the world’s most profitable truck makers, to beat a path to challenging industry leaders Daimler Truck AG and Volvo AB with newcomers like Nikola Corp. also making a push.

Truck maker Scania is testing hydrogen-electric heavy-duty trucks with Asko, Norway’s largest convenience goods wholesaler.

Volkswagen AG’s tarnished reputation suffered another blow after its Scania unit was slapped with a 880.5 million euro ($1.03 billion) fine for fixing truck prices, a year after other members of the cartel reached a record settlement with the European Union.

Volkswagen AG’s heavy-truck business assigned development of components for its largest vehicles to Swedish brand Scania, while MAN will be in charge of mid-sized and smaller models to reduce costs by eliminating duplicated work.

Scania Inc. said it will partner with one of Norway’s largest trucking companies to test trucks powered by electrical energy converted from hydrogen gas in fuel cells in the vehicle.

Scania said it will begin testing electric trucks powered by overhead lines in real-world conditions starting next February.

Volkswagen AG created a holding company for its MAN and Scania heavy-truck units in the latest effort to kick-start cost savings and cooperation efforts after buying the former rivals.
