The U.S. is poised to more than double duties on Canadian softwood lumber to 34.45%, putting more pressure on U.S. materials costs even before  any new tariffs on the sector.

President Donald Trump’s promised tariffs on softwood lumber risk disrupting the supply chain for something nobody wants to be caught without: toilet paper.

Lumber futures rose to the highest in more than two and a half years after President Donald Trump ordered an investigation into shipments of the commodity into the U.S.

The shift reflects how a key Canadian resource sector has declined due to U.S. duties and other challenges, including wildfires, land-use regulation and insect infestations.

As if things weren’t volatile enough in the lumber market, a Canada-U.S. trade tussle will make things worse.

High lumber prices are back, even as the industry steps into what is normally a seasonal lull.
