UPS to Purchase 285 Natural-Gas Powered Trucks in 2014

UPS Inc. said it will purchase 285 more natural-gas powered trucks in 2014 for its small-package delivery business, Bloomberg News reported.

UPS also said it willÌýbuild nine more natural-gas filling stations, including three in Tennessee due to natural gas available year-round for transportation and a favorable regulatory environment, according to Bloomberg.ÌýÌý

The purchaseÌýwill beÌýpart of a larger environmental sustainability effort.ÌýThe company vowing to reduce its diesel soot emissions by 75% by 2020 and reduce nitrogen oxides by 60%, Bloomberg reported.

The company said it does not plan on buyingÌýdiesel powered tractors next year.



The impending purchase follows April's announcement that the company will buy 700 liquefied natural gas-fueled trucks and construct four refueling stations by the end of 2014.

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
