Heidelberg Materials North America will build a $7.3 million aggregates distribution terminal in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region along the Interstate 95 corridor, state officials announced.
“We are proud that Heidelberg Materials continues to do business in South Carolina and invest in communities across our state,” Gov. Henry McMaster said recently. “This announcement underscores the strength of South Carolina’s workforce and economic climate.”
Heidelberg Materials North America, headquartered in Irving, Texas, supplies aggregates, asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete from 450 locations, including 16 in South Carolina. Germany-based parent company operates in some 3,000 locations in 50 countries and has 51,000 employees.

“The new aggregate depot will be complementary to our recent acquisition of Giant Cement. We are pleased to make this investment in the area and look forward to contributing to the continued growth and prosperity of the Lowcountry region of South Carolina,” said , company Southeast region president. “Our new rail distribution terminal in Colleton County will enable Heidelberg Materials to efficiently and more sustainably supply much-needed construction aggregates to this growing market.”
In April the company announced it had completed its purchase of Giant Cement Holding Inc. and its subsidiaries to expand access to cement markets in the Southeast and New England. The $600 million acquisition would give it such assets as a cement plant with an annual capacity of 800,000 tonnes in Harleyville, S.C., four cement distribution terminals in Georgia and South Carolina, partnership in a Savannah deep-water import terminal, a deep-water import terminal in Boston, and cement and slag distribution terminals in New Hampshire and Maine.
The new Colleton County aggregate terminal’s direct access to the Salkehatchie Subdivision rail line in will boost Heidelberg Materials’ distribution network in the Southeast. Palmetto Railways is a state enterprise agency under the Department of Commerce.

The nonprofit SouthernCarolina Regional Development Alliance in Barnwell helped solidify the deal for Heidelberg Materials to expand in Colleton County. The organization facilitates ties between government agencies and companies and can help businesses with grants, licensing and permitting, site preparation and environmental and engineering studies.

McCrory acknowledged Palmetto Railways’ collaboration with Heidelberg, Colleton County and SouthernCarolina Alliance as “a prime example of how we keep business on track.”
“SouthernCarolina Alliance welcomes Heidelberg Materials to our region of South Carolina,” said Danny Black, CEO of SCA, “and we appreciate the jobs and investment that their operation will bring to our communities. “The access to rail infrastructure with our partners at Palmetto Railways was integral in Heidelberg’s site selection.”
